O hedge da Solfácil para o futuro GD: baterias e comercialização

Solfácil, Brazil's solar financing giant with R$2B in revenue, launches battery-as-a-service and plans to enter the energy trading market.

Solfácil has launched a battery-as-a-service product and is preparing to enter Brazil's free energy market as the company pivots away from its roots in distributed solar generation, per Brazil Journal. The moves come as the subsidies that fueled the company's growth face growing regulatory scrutiny.

The battery-as-a-service model, which completed a soft launch over the past two months before its official release, works by having Solfácil install and operate the equipment at client sites and charge for the service rather than selling the hardware outright. The initial focus is commercial and industrial customers on medium-voltage tariffs, where daily price variation already makes energy arbitrage — storing cheap daytime power and discharging at night — financially viable. The company says customers can cut energy costs by 10% to 30% depending on their region and distribution utility. A full-scale energy trading operation is expected to begin in the coming months, and founder and CEO Fábio Carrara estimates that nearly half of Solfácil's revenue could come from energy commercialization within five years, according to Brazil Journal.

Founded in 2018 to finance rooftop solar systems, Solfácil has raised roughly US$180 million across three equity rounds from investors including Valor Capital, QED, and SoftBank, per Brazil Journal. The company subsequently tapped Brazil's capital markets and raised more than R$10 billion in debt to fund loan origination. It has since expanded into equipment distribution, which now accounts for half of revenue, and works through a network of approximately 10,000 solar integrators. Carrara told Brazil Journal the company has reached R$2 billion in annual revenue and is already profitable, though the figures are not publicly disclosed. Solfácil claims to have enabled more than 3 GW of distributed solar capacity across the country.

The strategic shift reflects broader pressures on Brazil's distributed generation sector. Installed distributed capacity has surpassed 50 GW nationally, but much of it sits outside the direct control of Brazil's grid operator, ONS, which cannot remotely switch off millions of small rooftop systems. The resulting generation surplus has driven curtailment — forced reductions in output from wind and solar plants — creating what Brazil Journal describes as a "death spiral" for parts of the sector. There is also a regulatory debate over who ultimately bears the cost of grid infrastructure: for years, net-metering rules allowed distributed generators to offset their usage without fully paying certain grid-access charges, with those costs redistributed to other consumers. Brazil's Lei 14.300 began a gradual transition away from those benefits for new systems, reducing incentives over coming years.

Carrara told Brazil Journal that he no longer positions Solfácil as a distributed-generation company but as a broader energy company, and said he aims to make it Brazil's largest energy company within a decade. The long-term vision is an energy subscription model in which customers buy electricity from Solfácil while the company installs and manages panels and batteries on their behalf. Solfácil has also begun financing electric vehicles, initially targeting ride-hailing drivers, as a way to connect EVs to the same generation, storage, and consumption ecosystem. "The energy company of the future will be built around the customer, not a centralized power plant," Carrara said.
