Humans in the loop are still needed for robotaxi fleet safety, says Guident
Guident CEO Harald Braun argues that remote human oversight remains essential for safe AV fleet operations, even as autonomous driving technology matures.
Guident Corp., the Herndon, Va.-based autonomous vehicle safety company, contends that human operators remain a necessary layer in robotaxi fleet management and cannot yet be replaced by autonomous systems alone, CEO Harald Braun told The Robot Report in an interview published August 25, 2026.
Braun said Guident's GuideOn platform combines AI-driven monitoring with remote teleoperation, allowing human operators to intervene selectively when an autonomous vehicle encounters a situation it cannot safely resolve on its own. The company operates six remote monitoring and control centers and has partnered with six autonomous shuttle operators, per The Robot Report. Separately, the company last week extended its partnership with Coastal Waste & Recycling by three years, expanding its WatchBot inspection robot and related software to locations across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Guident launched an autonomous shuttle service in Boca Raton, Florida, in November 2025. The company uses event-driven oversight, ultra-low-latency communications, and redundant connectivity so that no single operator or communications link becomes a critical point of failure, Braun said. He acknowledged that a remote operator could itself introduce risk, but argued that a properly designed system adds a safety layer rather than a dependency — provided the vehicle can reach a safe state independently if connectivity is lost.
The interview comes as commercial robotaxi deployments accelerate. Zoox Inc., the Foster City, Calif.-based Amazon subsidiary, this month began charging for rides in Las Vegas and has partnered with Uber as it expands to multiple cities, according to The Robot Report. Waymo continues its own commercial expansion. Braun noted that neither Zoox's purpose-built vehicles, which have no steering wheels, nor other AV platforms currently operate under federal safety standards specifically designed for autonomous vehicles — a gap he said creates inconsistency in how incidents and edge cases are measured and reported across the industry.
Braun called for standardized frameworks covering operational monitoring, incident reporting, remote human oversight, communications reliability, cybersecurity, operator qualifications, and fallback procedures. He stopped short of prescribing how companies must build their technology, saying the industry needs room to innovate, but argued that measurable safety expectations should apply across operators. On the question of data ownership, he drew a distinction between proprietary training data — which companies need to improve their systems — and safety-related incident data from vehicles operating in public environments, which he said regulators should be able to access in a consistent, standardized form.
