How Quick Commerce Has Become More Than A Convenience Play

Indian quick commerce is expanding beyond groceries and food into apparel, pharma, and beauty, reshaping how emerging brands reach consumers and manage working capital.

Indian quick commerce is moving beyond its core categories of food, groceries, and personal care into apparel, innerwear, pharma, health, and beauty, according to investors who spoke at Inc42's seventh D2C & Retail Summit in Gurugram, per Inc42. The panel argued the channel has matured from a convenience feature into a structural distribution layer for consumer brands.

The discussion featured Archana Jahagirdar, founder and managing partner at Rukam Capital; Manu Chandra, founder and managing partner of Sauce.vc; Arjun Vaidya, cofounder and managing partner of V3 Ventures; and Kannan Sitaram, cofounder and partner at Fireside Ventures, moderated by Aditya Singh, cofounder of All In Capital, as Inc42 reported. Jahagirdar drew a distinction between broad horizontal platforms — those stocking everything from groceries to gadgets — and vertical quick-commerce brands that focus on depth and specialised inventory in niche categories.

The behavioral shift among Indian consumers is driving the expansion. "The Indian consumer in the last four years has tasted blood," Chandra of Sauce.vc said, according to Inc42, describing how shoppers who once found three-day ecommerce delivery acceptable now expect near-instant fulfilment. That expectation is extending beyond impulse purchases to everyday apparel and home-consumed products.

The panel also challenged the assumption that quick commerce dependence is a liability for consumer brands. One investor on the panel noted that traditional and modern trade can leave brands waiting 150–180 days for receivables and with limited inventory visibility, whereas quick commerce can compress payment cycles to roughly 15 days, potentially creating a negative working-capital cycle for scaled brands, per Inc42. That financial mechanic changes the calculus for brands evaluating channel mix.

For emerging brands specifically, quick commerce also removes a traditional barrier to entry. Unlike legacy distribution, where established players used scale and existing channel relationships to crowd out newer entrants, the channel allows younger brands to compete on product quality, brand strength, and fulfilment speed, the panel argued. The investors said the key question is no longer whether a brand should list on quick commerce, but whether its growth on the channel is economically sustainable — with investors now scrutinising customer loyalty, margin improvement at scale, and whether growth is driven by genuine demand rather than heavy discounting.

The panel also addressed the evolving role of direct-to-consumer channels. D2C websites were once favoured because they gave brands direct ownership of the customer relationship, but rising acquisition and retention costs have made that route less compelling. Investors said they are increasingly open to marketplace-led growth when it delivers stronger unit economics, a shift that reflects the broader repositioning of quick commerce from a supplementary channel to a primary growth engine for Indian consumer brands.
