Cursor To Open First India Office By 2026 End: Report

Cursor, the US-based AI coding tool, plans to open its first physical office in India before the end of 2026, according to Inc42, which cited a Moneycontrol report. The company's Asia-Pacific and Japan head Simon Green said the move is imminent, with its first India-based employees already onboarded.

"Over the course of the next five months, you will see us make some fairly significant go-to-market efforts in India," Green was quoted as saying by Inc42. He added: "Our first employees are just starting. Before the end of the calendar year, you will see us in physical locations." The company has begun hiring for a mix of remote and on-site roles — including AI deployment, partnership management, and field engineering — with the majority of on-site positions concentrated in the Greater Bengaluru region, per its LinkedIn page.

Cursor makes an AI-powered code editor widely used by software developers. India is currently the company's third-largest market globally, with its India user base tripling to more than 3 million developers over the past year, per Inc42. The company has also described India as its highest-concentration market for power users worldwide. A few weeks prior to the office announcement, Cursor launched an India-only subscription plan called Cursor Start, priced at ₹649 per month.

The India expansion comes as competition among global AI companies in the country intensifies. OpenAI announced earlier this year at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 that it will open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and it claims India now has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. Anthropic opened its first India office in Bengaluru in February this year, describing India as its second-largest market for Claude. On the domestic side, Indian AI company Sarvam has entered the coding space with Sarvam Code, an AI coding agent for engineering teams, and has announced plans to build a trillion-parameter frontier model in India.

With physical locations expected before year-end and active hiring already underway in Bengaluru, Cursor's India footprint is set to grow materially in the near term. The company has not disclosed the size of its planned India headcount or named a specific city beyond the Greater Bengaluru region reference on its LinkedIn page.
