(Sm)all banks should compete on technology, not fear it

Community banks should embrace stablecoins and tokenized payments to retain customers rather than compete on digital money issuance.

Community banks do not need to issue their own stablecoins to benefit from stablecoins and digital payments—but they do need to ensure customers can access new forms of digital money without leaving the bank relationship, per Fortune. The core insight is that smaller banks risk losing customers and transaction data to fintech competitors if they ignore emerging payment technologies. Rather than attempt stablecoin issuance—a capital-intensive and regulatory-fraught endeavor—community banks should focus on offering their customers access to digital dollars and tokenized payment options while keeping deposits, payments, and treasury relationships within the bank itself.

The strategic shift reflects a broader market reality: community banks are not well-positioned to launch proprietary stablecoins, which typically require substantial infrastructure, regulatory approval, and technology investment. Instead, Fortune argues that integrating third-party stablecoin infrastructure into existing banking relationships is a more practical path. By offering these payment rails as services to their depositors, banks can maintain customer engagement while competing on the convenience and integration of their platforms rather than on the ability to mint new digital currencies.

The competition for community banks is increasingly about technological adoption and customer retention. As fintech platforms expand access to tokenized payments and digital currencies, traditional banks that do not offer these services risk being bypassed for transaction settlement, treasury management, and day-to-day payments. The data loss alone—understanding how and where customers move money—represents a strategic threat. Fortune frames this as a matter of survival: community banks must compete on technology and customer experience, not fear the innovation that is reshaping payments infrastructure.

The broader implication is that stablecoins and tokenized payments are becoming baseline infrastructure, not experimental features. Community banks that view these tools as threats rather than opportunities risk ceding market share to banks and fintechs that offer frictionless digital payment experiences. The path forward for smaller institutions is pragmatic integration—partnering with or building on stablecoin networks—rather than attempting to issue competing currencies themselves.
